OneTryPass wrote these questions from the Texas Driver Handbook (DL-7, January 2026). Pick an answer to see if you got it; each explanation names the part of the handbook it comes from.

  1. Getting your permit

Question 1. Who can ride with you as your supervising driver while you hold a Texas learner license?

    Show answer

Answer: B. A licensed driver at least 21 with one year of driving experience, in the front passenger seat

The supervising driver must be at least 21, have at least one year of driving experience and sit beside you. They cannot be intoxicated, asleep or doing anything that keeps them from watching your driving.

  2. Signs and signals

Question 2. What does a pennant-shaped sign tell you?

    Show answer

Answer: C. A no-passing zone is coming up

In Texas, the pennant shape is used only to give advance warning of a no-passing zone. Octagons are stop signs, equilateral triangles are yield signs and five-sided signs mark schools.

  3. Right of way

Question 3. On a two-lane road, a school bus coming toward you stops and turns on its alternating red lights. What must you do?

    Show answer

Answer: C. Stop until the bus moves on, the driver signals you to go, or the red lights stop flashing

Texas drivers approaching from either direction must stop for a school bus showing alternating red lights. Stay stopped until it moves, the driver waves you on, or the lights go off.

  4. Railroad crossings

Question 4. The gate at a railroad crossing is coming down. Where do you stop?

    Show answer

Answer: A. Between 15 and 50 feet from the nearest rail

Stop between 15 and 50 feet from the nearest rail when a gate is lowered, a signal warns of a train, or a train within about 1,500 feet sounds its horn. Ignoring the law can cost $50 to $200.

    From Texas Driver Handbook (DL-7, January 2026) · Chapter 4: Right-of-Way

  5. Sharing the road

Question 5. An ambulance with its flashing red lights on passes you. How closely may you follow it?

    Show answer

Answer: B. No closer than 500 feet

Texas law keeps drivers at least 500 feet behind an ambulance with its red lights flashing, or a fire truck answering an alarm.

  6. Right of way

    Show answer

    Answer: D. 25 mph

When you cannot leave the lane closest to a stopped emergency vehicle, slow to no more than 20 mph under a posted limit of 25 mph or more. On a 45 mph road that is 25 mph.

  7. Speed and following distance

Question 7. You are driving 50 mph on a dry road. How much following time should you keep behind the car ahead?

    Show answer

    Answer: C. 4 seconds

The Texas Driver Handbook calls for a 2-second gap at 30 mph or less and 4 seconds above 30 mph in good conditions, and more time on wet or icy roads.

From Texas Driver Handbook (DL-7, January 2026) · Chapter 8: Speed and Speed Limits

    Show answer

Answer: B. From 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise, and any time you cannot see people or vehicles clearly at 1,000 feet

Headlights go on 30 minutes after sunset and stay on until 30 minutes before sunrise, plus any time visibility drops below 1,000 feet. Switch to low beams within 500 feet of oncoming traffic.

  9. Parking

Question 9. You want to park on the approach to a stop sign at the side of the road. What is the closest you may park?

    Show answer

Answer: C. 30 feet from the sign

Do not park within 30 feet of a stop sign, yield sign or flashing signal you are approaching. Fire hydrants need 15 feet and crosswalks at intersections need 20 feet.

From Texas Driver Handbook (DL-7, January 2026) · Chapter 7: Parking, Stopping, or Standing

  10. Alcohol and drugs

Question 10. A 19-year-old in Texas drives with a small amount of alcohol in their system, well under 0.08. What is true?

    Show answer

Answer: C. It is a crime, because Texas has zero tolerance for drivers under 21

Under the Texas zero tolerance law, a driver under 21 with any detectable amount of alcohol commits Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor, even below the 0.08 limit that applies at 21.

Texas permit test questions people ask

How many questions are on the Texas permit test, and what score passes?

Texas DPS sets one bar for every knowledge exam: a grade of 70 percent or better. That covers the Class C exam a teen takes before getting a learner license.

Neither the handbook nor the DPS learner license page gives the number of questions, so OneTryPass does not quote one. Many teens take the exam inside their driver education course instead of at a DPS office.

What are the rules for a Texas learner license and provisional license?

With a learner license, a licensed adult 21 or older must sit in the front passenger seat, and phones are off limits, hands-free included, except in an emergency. You hold it for at least six months unless you turn 18 first.

The provisional license that follows allows only one passenger under 21 who is not family and bans driving from midnight to 5 a.m., with exceptions for work, school and emergencies.
