Some states give the passing score as a number of correct answers (“14 of 20”), and the table repeats it that way instead of converting it to a percentage. “Not published” means the state's current DMV pages that OneTryPass checked don't give the number. The cell stays empty rather than repeating a figure from an unofficial site. The other 0 states are not on OneTryPass yet; each one is added only after its rules are checked.

How this table is built

Each value comes from the state agency's own website or driver handbook, never from another practice site. When a rule reaches its re-check date without being read again, it leaves the table on the next daily update: knowledge test after 120 days, minimum age after 365 days, fees after 90 days.

Each state page goes further: the documents to bring, what happens if you fail, the rules for a learner permit and a free sample test with answers. Full practice packs are $14.95 per state. See how we check.

Driving a truck or a bus instead?

A commercial driver's license has its own learner's permit and its own knowledge tests, built on federal rules. The CDL permit test page covers the minimum ages, the learner's permit, the tests for each class and endorsement and the permit fees by state, and there is a free CDL practice test.

DMV permit tests across states: FAQ

Which state has the highest passing score on the permit test?

Among the states OneTryPass has checked, Maryland sets the highest bar at 88%. Arizona, California, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah and Wisconsin require 80%; Ohio requires 75%; Michigan and Texas require 70%. Each figure comes from the state's own DMV pages, checked on Oct 26, 2026.

Which state lets you get a learner's permit at the youngest age?

Of the states on OneTryPass, Alaska, Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, North Dakota and South Dakota issue a permit at 14; Idaho and Montana at 14½; Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming at 15; Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia at 15½; Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island at 16. Each state page lists the driver education and documents it requires.

Why is the number of questions missing for some states?

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming do not state the number of questions on the official pages OneTryPass checked, so the cell stays empty instead of repeating a figure from an unofficial site. Georgia (2 parts of 20) and Virginia (10 + 30, in 2 parts) split the test into two parts, each with its own passing score, so there is no single total for the table; the state page has both parts. Where the agency publishes the passing score, it is in the table.
