OneTryPass wrote these questions from the New Jersey Driver Manual. Pick an answer to see if you got it; each explanation names the part of the handbook it comes from.

  1. Getting your permit

Question 1. What is the earliest age at which a New Jersey teen can hold a special learner permit?

    Show answer

Answer: B. 16, while enrolled in an approved behind-the-wheel driver training course

A New Jersey teen can get a special learner permit at 16 only while enrolled in an approved behind-the-wheel course, and the instructor buys the permit. Without a course, the examination permit starts at 17.

  2. Getting your permit

Question 2. You hold a New Jersey special learner permit. During which hours are you barred from driving?

    Show answer

    Answer: C. 11:01 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.

New Jersey keeps permit holders off the road from 11:01 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. The only way around it for drivers under 21 is a signed letter on employer or religious letterhead showing a need to drive in those hours.

  3. Parking

Question 3. In New Jersey, you may not park within how many feet of a stop sign?

    Show answer

    Answer: D. 50 feet

The New Jersey Driver Manual puts both stop signs and railroad crossings behind a 50-foot no-parking line. Fire hydrants need 10 feet, and a crosswalk at an intersection needs 25 feet.

  4. Right of way

Question 4. A school bus has stopped with its red lights flashing on a two-lane New Jersey road. How far from the bus must you stop?

    Show answer

Answer: C. At least 25 feet

Whether you are behind the bus or coming toward it, stop at least 25 feet away. Move again only after its signals turn off, and keep watching for children.

  5. Speed and following distance

Question 5. No speed limit sign is posted on a rural New Jersey road. What is the legal maximum?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 50 mph

Unless a sign says otherwise, New Jersey sets 50 mph on rural roadways, 25 mph in school zones and business or residential districts, and 35 mph in suburban business and residential districts.

  6. Sharing the road

Question 6. An ice cream truck ahead is flashing red lights and has its stop signal arm out. After you stop, what is the fastest you may drive past it?

    Show answer

    Answer: C. 15 mph

New Jersey drivers yield to anyone walking to or from a frozen dessert truck, stop, and then go by at 15 mph or less. On a dual highway, drivers across a raised median or safety island do not have to stop.

  7. Alcohol and drugs

Question 7. At what blood alcohol concentration is it illegal for a 19-year-old to drive in New Jersey?

    Show answer

    Answer: A. 0.01% or higher

Drivers under 21 in New Jersey break the law at a BAC of 0.01%. A first underage offense costs 30 to 90 days of driving privileges and 15 to 30 days of community service.

  8. Right of way

Question 8. A pedestrian is crossing in a marked crosswalk in front of you. What does New Jersey law require?

    Show answer

Answer: B. Come to a complete stop and stay stopped until the pedestrian clears your lane and the next lane in your direction

Slowing down or yielding is not enough in New Jersey: you must stop completely. Failing to stop for a pedestrian can bring a fine of up to $500, up to 25 days in jail and 2 points.

  9. Sharing the road

Question 9. You need to pass a bicyclist on a road with one lane in your direction, and you cannot move over a lane. What does the New Jersey Safe Passing Law require?

    Show answer

Answer: D. Leave at least 4 feet, or slow to 25 mph until passing is safe

Under the Safe Passing Law, move over a lane when you can. If you cannot, leave at least 4 feet; when 4 feet is not possible, slow to 25 mph and be ready to stop until it is safe to pass.

  10. Night driving

Question 10. Besides the hours of darkness, when does New Jersey require your headlights to be on?

    Show answer

Answer: A. When you use windshield wipers for rain, snow or ice, or visibility is 500 feet or less

Headlights stay on from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise, when visibility is 500 feet or less, and whenever wipers are running for rain, snow or ice. Parking lights cannot replace them.

New Jersey permit test questions people ask

How many questions are on the New Jersey permit test, and what score passes?

The MVC knowledge test has 50 questions, plus one survey question about organ donation. You pass with 40 correct answers, which is 80 percent, and a vision screening is part of the same visit.

You can take the written test in English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese and several other languages, or an oral version in English or Spanish. If your language is missing, the MVC can line up an interpreter, usually within four to six weeks.

How old do you have to be to get a permit in New Jersey?

New Jersey has two starting points. At 16, a teen enrolled in an approved six-hour behind-the-wheel course can get a special learner permit, bought by the instructor. At 17, anyone can buy an examination permit without a driving school.

Either way, the permit is not good for practice until it is validated after the knowledge test and vision screening. The unrestricted basic license comes at 18 at the earliest, after a year on a probationary license.

What are the rules for a New Jersey permit and probationary license?

Under 21, you practice for at least 6 months and log 50 hours, 10 of them after dark, on form BA-CSD. Permit holders 21 and older practice for 3 months.

Permit drivers under 21 stay off the road from 11:01 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., carry only one passenger beyond dependents unless a parent or guardian rides along, and put red GDL decals on both plates. Every permit driver has a supervisor 21 or older with three years of experience, and no permit or probationary driver may use a phone, hands-free included.

What documents do you need for a New Jersey permit?

A standard license uses the 6 Points of ID system: a primary document, a secondary document, at least six points in all, and proof of a New Jersey address. A REAL ID follows 2+1+6, adding a second proof of address and proof of your Social Security number.

The standard basic license is open to every eligible New Jersey resident regardless of immigration status.
