Iowa permit test questions people ask

How old do you need to be for an Iowa instruction permit?

Fourteen. The permit is the first of three steps in Iowa’s graduated licensing for drivers under 18: instruction permit, intermediate license at 16 and full license at 17.

A parent or guardian consents in person at the DMV or on form 430018, and the teen passes the knowledge and vision tests.

Where can you take the Iowa permit test, and what score passes?

There are three routes: a DMV or county treasurer’s office, an at-home test proctored by a parent on a computer, or a school in the Skip the Trip program. A passing result is good for 180 days.

The rules leave the passing score to the Iowa DOT, and the pages read for this guide do not state it for the real test, so OneTryPass does not quote one. The DOT’s own practice quiz uses 80%.

What are the rules for an Iowa permit and intermediate license?

Permit holders drive with a parent, guardian or custodian, a licensed family member 21 or older, a driver education instructor, or someone 25 or older with written parental permission, and never with more passengers than seat belts.

After twelve months and 20 logged hours, the intermediate license follows; it bars driving from 12:30 a.m. to 5 a.m. without an approved companion and, unless a parent waives it, limits unrelated minor passengers to one for six months.
