    Show answer

  3. Speed and following distance

Question 3. It is 8 a.m. on a school day, children are present and a school zone is marked. How fast may you drive?

    Show answer

    Answer: A. 20 mph

Illinois permit test questions people ask

What is on the Illinois written driver’s exam?

The written exam checks that you can name signs by shape, color or symbol and read signals and pavement markings, then asks multiple-choice and true-or-false questions on traffic laws, safety rules, crash prevention and vehicle equipment.

Every permit requires a vision screening and the written test, and the minimum acuity is 20/40. The Rules of the Road 2026 does not give the number of questions or the passing score, so OneTryPass does not quote either one.

How old do you have to be to get an instruction permit in Illinois?

Fifteen, with a document from an authorized driver education provider saying you are enrolled in an approved course or will start one within 30 days. From 17 years and 3 months, you can apply without driver education.

First-time applicants aged 18, 19 or 20 who never finished driver education take a six-hour Adult Driver Education Course, and only providers certified by the Secretary of State count.

What are the rules for an Illinois instruction permit?

The permit lasts 24 months, and a teen keeps it at least nine consecutive months while logging 50 supervised hours, 10 of them at night. The supervisor is a parent, guardian or responsible adult 21 or older with a valid license and a year behind the wheel, in the front passenger seat.

Permit holders stay off the road from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Until 19, any phone use while driving is banned, hands-free included, except to call for emergency help.

What documents do you need for an Illinois permit or license?

Applicants prove legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, residency and signature with documents from the Secretary of State’s list. A teen applying for the license before 18 also brings the permit and a signed 50-hour driving log.

REAL ID is a choice in Illinois, not a requirement: a standard card still works for driving, and anyone with a valid U.S. passport or passport card does not need a REAL ID.
