Question 2. A 16-year-old is driving with a Connecticut learner’s permit. Who may ride in the car?

    Show answer

Answer: A. Only a parent, legal guardian or qualified trainer (or a licensed driving instructor)

    Show answer

    Answer: D. 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Connecticut’s curfew for 16- and 17-year-old license holders runs from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Driving for work, school, religious activities or a medical need is still allowed.

  4. Sharing the road

Question 4. An ice cream truck ahead has its lights flashing and its stop arm and crossing arm out. What does Connecticut law require?

    Show answer

Answer: B. Stop at least 10 feet from the truck, then pass at no more than 5 mph, yielding to anyone walking to or from it

Connecticut treats a signaling ice cream truck almost like a school bus: stop at least 10 feet from its front or back, then creep past at up to 5 mph and yield to pedestrians crossing. The rule does not apply across a safety island or barrier.

  5. Right of way

Question 5. On a road with no median, a school bus facing you stops on the other side and flashes its red lights. What must you do in Connecticut?

    Show answer

Answer: C. Stop, and wait until the red lights go off and the children are out of the road

Connecticut drivers stop for a school bus flashing red lights on their side, the opposite side or at an intersection ahead. The only exception is an oncoming bus separated from you by a median or other physical barrier.

    Show answer

Answer: A. It is suspended for at least 45 days, and an ignition interlock is needed to get it back

Drivers under 21 fall under Connecticut’s zero tolerance rule, which starts at .02 percent. A test at that level means a suspension of at least 45 days and an ignition interlock device as a condition of reinstatement.

    Show answer

Answer: B. No, drivers who are 16 or 17 may not use any phone, even hands-free, except in an emergency

Adults in Connecticut may talk hands-free, but drivers aged 16 and 17 may not use a cell phone or mobile electronic device at all while driving. Calls to emergency services are the exception.
