Free Virginia practice test: 10 questions

OneTryPass wrote these questions from the Virginia Driver’s Manual (DMV 39). Pick an answer to see if you got it; each explanation names the part of the handbook it comes from.

  1. Getting your permit

Question 1. Who may sit beside you as your supervising driver while you practice on a Virginia learner’s permit?

    Show answer

Answer: B. A licensed driver 21 or older, or a licensed brother, sister or legal guardian who is 18, 19 or 20

The Virginia Driver’s Manual calls for a licensed driver at least 21 in the front passenger seat, alert and able to help. A sibling, half- or step-sibling or legal guardian may supervise at 18, 19 or 20.

From Virginia Driver’s Manual (DMV 39) · Section 6: License Types

  2. Signs and signals

Question 2. When may you turn left on a steady red light in Virginia after coming to a complete stop?

    Show answer

Answer: C. When turning from a one-way street onto another one-way street

Virginia allows a left on red only from a one-way street onto another one-way street, after a full stop and after yielding to pedestrians and traffic. A No Turn on Red sign or a red arrow rules it out.

From Virginia Driver’s Manual (DMV 39) · Section 2: Signals, Signs and Pavement Markings

  3. Turns and lanes

Question 3. A center lane has a solid and a broken yellow line on each side. How far may you drive in it before turning left?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 150 feet

That shared center lane is for left turns by traffic from either direction, and Virginia drivers may not travel more than 150 feet in it.

From Virginia Driver’s Manual (DMV 39) · Section 2: Signals, Signs and Pavement Markings

  4. Speed and following distance

Question 4. Virginia law lets an officer charge you with reckless driving for speed alone when you drive:

    Show answer

Answer: C. 20 mph or more over the limit, or faster than 85 mph

Going 20 mph or more above the limit, or over 85 mph on any road, can bring a reckless driving charge, a criminal misdemeanor in Virginia. Radar detectors are illegal in the state too.

From Virginia Driver’s Manual (DMV 39) · Section 3: Safe Driving

  5. Speed and following distance

Question 5. No speed limit sign is posted on an unpaved Virginia road. What is the maximum speed for a car?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 35 mph

Without a posted limit, Virginia caps cars and motorcycles at 35 mph on unpaved roads, 25 mph in school, business and residential areas, and 55 mph on every other road.

From Virginia Driver’s Manual (DMV 39) · Section 3: Safe Driving

  6. Right of way

Question 6. A school bus with flashing red lights and its stop sign out is stopped across a median from you on a divided road. What must you do?

    Show answer

Answer: D. Keep going with care; the median means you do not have to stop

Virginia drivers stop for a stopped school bus from any direction, except when heading the opposite way on a road split by a median or barrier with the bus on the far side. Still watch for people leaving the bus.

From Virginia Driver’s Manual (DMV 39) · Section 3: Safe Driving

  7. Sharing the road

Question 7. On a two-lane Virginia road you come up behind a stopped trash truck collecting trash, and you cannot change lanes. How must you pass it?

    Show answer

Answer: A. Slow to 10 mph below the posted limit and pass at least 2 feet to its left

On a highway with fewer than four lanes, or whenever you cannot change lanes, slow to 10 mph under the limit and give a stopped trash truck at least 2 feet of room as you pass.

From Virginia Driver’s Manual (DMV 39) · Section 3: Safe Driving

  8. Parking

Question 8. When you park next to a curb in Virginia, what is the farthest your car may be from it?

    Show answer

    Answer: A. 1 foot

Virginia does not allow parking more than one foot from the curb. On a two-way street, park on the right side; on a one-way road, either side is allowed.

From Virginia Driver’s Manual (DMV 39) · Section 3: Safe Driving

  9. Night driving

Question 9. You are driving at night behind another vehicle in Virginia. Within what distance of it must you be using low beams?

    Show answer

    Answer: C. 200 feet

Switch to low beams once you are within 200 feet of a vehicle you are following, and dim your high beams for oncoming traffic within 500 feet.

From Virginia Driver’s Manual (DMV 39) · Section 3: Safe Driving

  10. Alcohol and drugs

Question 10. A 20-year-old is convicted in Virginia of driving after drinking, with a BAC of 0.03%. What court penalty applies?

    Show answer

Answer: D. A one-year license suspension plus a $500 minimum fine or at least 50 hours of community service

For a driver under 21, a BAC of at least 0.02% but under 0.08% is illegal consumption in Virginia: one year without a license and a $500 minimum fine or 50 hours of community service. At 0.08% or more, adult DUI penalties can apply.

Under 18, you wait a full 15 days; fail on January 1 and the first retake date is January 17. At 18 or older, you can try once per day.

A third failure at any age sends you to the classroom part of an approved driver training program before you can test again, and each retake means a fresh permit application with your documents.

What rules apply to a Virginia learner’s permit and teen license?

Teens keep the permit at least nine months, finish driver education and log 45 hours of driving, 15 after sunset, certified by a parent or guardian. A permit holder can carry only one passenger under 18 outside the family.

Until 18, there is no driving from midnight to 4 a.m. except for work, emergencies and the other listed reasons, and no phone use behind the wheel, hands-free included. Starting January 1, 2027, new drivers 18 through 20 also need driver education and a 90-day permit.
