Free Alaska practice test: 10 questions

OneTryPass wrote these questions from the Alaska Driver Manual (Rev. 10/2025). Pick an answer to see if you got it; each explanation names the part of the handbook it comes from.

  1. Getting your permit

Question 1. Who can supervise you while you drive a car on an Alaska instruction permit?

    Show answer

Answer: C. A licensed driver at least 21 with at least one year of experience in that type of vehicle, in the seat beside you

The Alaska Driver Manual requires a licensed driver who is at least 21 and has at least one year of driving experience in the same class of vehicle. For a car, that person sits next to you.

  2. Right of way

Question 2. You are driving on a two-lane road outside an urban area, and a line of cars builds up behind you. When does Alaska law require you to pull over safely and let them by?

    Show answer

Answer: B. When five or more vehicles are right behind you

Under AS 28.35.140, a driver on a two-lane road outside an urban area must safely pull over when five or more vehicles are immediately behind. Drivers also have a duty to yield to following traffic.

  3. Alcohol and drugs

Question 3. An 18-year-old in Alaska drives after drinking, and a breath test finds a small amount of alcohol. What does the DMV do on a first offense?

    Show answer

Answer: A. Revokes the driving privilege for 30 days

Alaska drivers under 21 may not drive after consuming any amount of alcohol. A first offense, or a refusal to take the breath test, brings a 30-day administrative revocation even if the court case is dismissed.

  4. Night driving

Question 4. It is daytime, but fog has rolled in. At what visibility does Alaska law require your headlights to be on?

    Show answer

Answer: D. When visibility is 1,000 feet or less

Alaska’s lighting law calls for headlights in daytime whenever fog, rain, snow, smoke or dust cuts visibility to 1,000 feet or less, and from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise.

  5. Parking

Question 5. A fire truck has stopped with its emergency lights flashing. How close to it may you park?

    Show answer

    Show answer

Answer: B. You do not have to stop, but stay alert

In Alaska, drivers on a highway with separated roadways and two or more lanes in each direction need not stop for a school bus going the other way. On other roads, drivers meeting or following the bus must stop.

  8. Turns and lanes

Question 8. Alaska drivers may not pass when coming within what distance of an intersection, a railroad crossing or a posted narrow bridge?

    Show answer

    Show answer

Answer: D. Stop, yield to traffic on your right, and go only when safe

Alaska permit test questions people ask

Can you take the Alaska permit test online?

Yes. Alaska runs its written knowledge test through KnowToDrive, so you can sit it on your own device at home, pick a language, turn on audio and see the result right away.

Questions come only from the Alaska Driver Manual: traffic laws, safe driving and sign recognition. The DMV does not publish a question count or passing score, so OneTryPass does not quote either.

What rules apply to Alaska permits and provisional licenses?

On a permit, your supervisor must be at least 21 with a year of experience in that kind of vehicle. Before the provisional license, an adult signs off on 40 hours of driving, including 10 hours in bad weather, darkness or other harder conditions.

Provisional drivers carry no passengers under 21 except siblings unless a parent, guardian or someone 21 or older is aboard. They stay off the road from 1 to 5 a.m. unless such an adult rides along or they are driving for work. A violation means a $200 fine and 2 points.
