Free Utah practice test: 10 questions

OneTryPass wrote these questions from the Utah Driver Handbook (2026). Pick an answer to see if you got it; each explanation names the part of the handbook it comes from.

  1. Getting your permit

Question 1. What score do you need to pass the Utah written knowledge test for a learner permit?

    Show answer

    Answer: C. 80% or better

The Utah handbook sets the bar at 80% or better. The test has no time limit, though most people need 30 to 45 minutes to finish it.

From Utah Driver Handbook (2026) · Section 6: Examinations — Written Knowledge Test

  2. Alcohol and drugs

Question 2. What blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit does Utah set for drivers 21 and older?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 0.05

Utah uses a 0.05 BAC limit for regular drivers (0.04 for commercial drivers). You can still be cited below that level if you are too impaired to drive safely.

From Utah Driver Handbook (2026) · Section 10: Alcohol/Drugs and Driving — Alcohol and the Law

  3. Alcohol and drugs

Question 3. Under Utah's Not-a-Drop Act, what happens on a first offense when a driver under 21 has any measurable alcohol in their body?

    Show answer

Answer: C. All driving privileges are denied for six months

For drivers under 21, any measurable alcohol counts. A first Not-a-Drop offense means six months without driving privileges, even for someone who has not been issued a license yet.

From Utah Driver Handbook (2026) · Section 10: Alcohol/Drugs and Driving — 21 and Under

  4. Speed and following distance

Question 4. No sign is posted and you are passing a school building during recess. What speed does Utah law allow?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 20 mph

Where no sign says otherwise, Utah allows 20 mph past a school during recess and while children go to or leave school. Business and residential areas allow 25 mph.

From Utah Driver Handbook (2026) · Section 9: Rules of the Road — Speed

  5. Parking

Question 5. How close to a stop sign, yield sign, flashing beacon or traffic signal may you park in Utah?

    Show answer

Answer: A. No closer than 30 feet

The handbook lists 30 feet from any flashing beacon, stop sign, yield sign or traffic control signal. Fire hydrants need 15 feet and crosswalks 20 feet.

From Utah Driver Handbook (2026) · Section 8: Basic Driving — Parking

  6. Right of way

Question 6. On a highway with five or more lanes and a shared center turn lane, a school bus stops with flashing red lights in the opposite direction. What does Utah law require of you?

    Show answer

Answer: D. You are not legally required to stop, but you should watch for children

On those wide roads only the vehicles in both lanes behind the bus must stop. Oncoming drivers may continue, but the handbook urges caution because students may run into the road.

From Utah Driver Handbook (2026) · Section 8: Basic Driving — Stopping

  7. Sharing the road

Question 7. What is the least space Utah law allows between your car and a bicyclist you are passing?

    Show answer

    Answer: C. 3 feet

Utah requires at least three feet when passing a bicyclist or other vulnerable road user, and the handbook asks you to slow down and give as much room as you can.

From Utah Driver Handbook (2026) · Section 14: Sharing the Road — Bicycles

  8. Getting your permit

Question 8. When may a 17-year-old Utah driver use a handheld phone while driving?

    Show answer

Answer: A. Only for a medical emergency, to report a hazard or a crime, or to talk with a parent or legal guardian

Drivers under 18 may use a handheld wireless device only in those situations. Drivers over 18 may talk on the phone if voice commands connect the call, but nobody may text while driving.

From Utah Driver Handbook (2026) · Section 11: Distractions and Driving Challenges — Handheld Wireless Communication

  9. Sharing the road

Question 9. You are about to pass a stationary vehicle beside the highway with its hazard lights flashing. What does Utah's move over law ask you to do?

    Show answer

Answer: D. Slow down, give it as much room as you can and, if practical, move to a lane not next to it

The move over law covers any stationary vehicle with flashing hazards that is not legally parked. A conviction for ignoring it means a four-hour live defensive driving class within 90 days.

From Utah Driver Handbook (2026) · Section 14: Sharing the Road — Emergency Vehicles

  10. Turns and lanes

Question 10. In Utah, how long must your turn signal be on before you change lanes?

    Show answer

Answer: B. At least 2 seconds

Utah requires the signal for two seconds before any turn or lane change, and any time you pull to or away from a curb.

From Utah Driver Handbook (2026) · Section 8: Basic Driving — Signaling

Utah permit test questions people ask

How many questions are on the Utah learner permit test, and what score passes?

The written knowledge test is closed book and has 50 questions. A passing score is 80% or better; nobody times you, but most people finish within 30 to 45 minutes.

Before the first license there is one more hurdle: the online Traffic Safety and Trends Exam, made of four short videos and 40 questions. It must be passed with 100%, and you can retake it as many times as you need.

What rules apply to Utah permit holders and new teen drivers?

With a learner permit, the person beside you must be a licensed parent, stepparent, foster parent, legal guardian, approved driving instructor or a responsible adult 21 or older. Teens also finish driver education and log 40 practice hours, 10 after sunset.

Once licensed, 16- and 17-year-olds stay off the road from midnight to 5 a.m. unless an exception applies, and for six months or until 18 they carry only immediate family unless a licensed driver 21 or older is in the passenger seat. Until 18, a handheld phone is off limits except for emergencies, hazards, crimes or a parent’s call.
