Free New York practice test: 10 questions

OneTryPass wrote these questions from the New York State Driver's Manual (MV-21). Pick an answer to see if you got it; each explanation names the part of the handbook it comes from.

  1. Getting your permit

Question 1. You have a junior learner permit and want to practice in Brooklyn at 10 p.m. with your licensed mother beside you. Is that allowed?

    Show answer

Answer: C. No, junior permit holders may not drive in New York City between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

In the five boroughs, a junior permit holder may drive only from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a parent, guardian or instructor and a car with dual brakes. From 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. no driving is allowed at all.

From New York State Driver's Manual (MV-21) · Chapter 1: Driver Licenses › Regional Restrictions for a Junior Permit

  2. Alcohol and drugs

Question 2. Under New York's Zero Tolerance Law, what happens to a driver under 21 found at a DMV hearing to have driven with a BAC of .02 to .07?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. A six-month license suspension

The license is suspended for six months, and getting it back takes a $100 suspension termination fee plus a $125 civil penalty. A second violation means revocation for at least one year or until age 21, whichever is longer.

From New York State Driver's Manual (MV-21) · Chapter 9: Alcohol and Other Drugs › Zero Tolerance for Drivers Under Age 21

  3. Speed and following distance

Question 3. You are driving outside New York City on a road with no posted speed limit. What is the most you may drive?

    Show answer

    Answer: D. 55 mph

When no limit is posted, New York drivers may go no faster than 55 mph. In New York City the limit is 25 mph unless another limit is posted.

From New York State Driver's Manual (MV-21) · Chapter 8: Defensive Driving › Speed

  4. Signs and signals

Question 4. May you turn right on a steady red light in New York City?

    Show answer

Answer: A. Only where a sign permits it

Elsewhere in New York State you may turn right on red after a full stop unless a sign forbids it. In New York City it is the reverse: turning on red is not allowed unless a sign permits it.

From New York State Driver's Manual (MV-21) · Chapter 4: Traffic Control › Traffic Lights

  5. Sharing the road

Question 5. A school bus with flashing red lights is stopped on the opposite side of a divided highway. What must you do?

    Show answer

Answer: B. Stop, because New York requires it even across a divided highway

New York law applies on every roadway: you must stop for a school bus with red lights flashing even on the other side of a divided highway. Wait until the bus moves or the driver or an officer signals you on.

From New York State Driver's Manual (MV-21) · Chapter 6: Passing › School Buses

  6. Night driving

Question 6. At night you are following another vehicle in the next lane. How close may you get before you must dim your high beams?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 200 feet

New York requires low beams within 200 feet of a vehicle ahead, even one in a different lane, and within 500 feet of an oncoming vehicle.

From New York State Driver's Manual (MV-21) · Chapter 10: Special Driving Conditions › Night Driving

  7. Parking

Question 7. A fire station driveway is across the street from where you want to park. How far from it must you stay?

    Show answer

    Answer: C. 75 feet

Parking or standing is not allowed within 75 feet of a fire station driveway on the opposite side of the road, or within 20 feet on the same side.

From New York State Driver's Manual (MV-21) · Chapter 7: Parallel Parking › Parking Regulations

  8. Getting your permit

Question 8. How many points within 24 months lead the New York DMV to notify you that your license will be suspended?

    Show answer

    Answer: C. 11 points

Points count from the date of the violation, and 11 or more within 24 months bring a suspension notice. A DMV-approved crash prevention course can take off up to four points.

From New York State Driver's Manual (MV-21) · Chapter 2: How to Keep Your License › The Point System

  9. Turns and lanes

Question 9. You may not make a U-turn where other drivers cannot see your vehicle from how far away in either direction?

    Show answer

    Answer: D. 500 feet

A U-turn is illegal near a hilltop, curve or any spot where drivers cannot see you from 500 feet. U-turns are also banned in New York City business districts, in school zones and on limited access expressways.

From New York State Driver's Manual (MV-21) · Chapter 5: Intersections and Turns › U-Turns

  10. Railroad crossings

Question 10. You are behind an empty school bus as it nears a railroad crossing with no train in sight. What should you expect?

    Show answer

Answer: A. The bus will stop, because school buses stop at all crossings with or without passengers

School buses with or without passengers, other buses carrying passengers and vehicles hauling explosives or flammable cargo must stop at every railroad crossing, so be ready to stop behind them.

From New York State Driver's Manual (MV-21) · Chapter 10: Special Driving Conditions › Railroad Crossings

New York permit test questions people ask

How many questions are on the New York permit test, and what score passes?

The written test has 20 questions on rules of the road, safe driving, road signs and alcohol and drug laws. You pass with at least 14 correct, but two of those must come from the four road sign questions: a strong score with only one sign right still fails.

Applicants under 18 can take the permit test online. The DMV then needs three business days to review the results; going to an office sooner means taking the test again there.

How old do you have to be to get a learner permit in New York?

Sixteen. No one under 16 may drive in New York State, even holding another state’s license. High school students can take the written test through OKTA from 15 years and 11 months, then bring the receipt to a DMV office once they turn 16.

The junior license (Class DJ) also starts at 16. The full Class D license comes at 18, or at 17 with a driver education Certificate of Completion.

Where and when can you drive with a New York junior learner permit?

It depends on the region. In the five boroughs of New York City, a junior permit holder drives only from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a parent, guardian or instructor, in a car with dual brakes. Upstate, any licensed driver 21 or older can supervise from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., but only a parent, guardian or instructor at night.

No permit holder may drive in a DMV road test area, on New York City park streets or Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority crossings, or on the Cross County, Hutchinson River, Saw Mill River and Taconic State parkways.

The road test comes after at least six months with the permit and 50 hours of practice, 15 of them after sunset, certified by a parent or guardian on form MV-262.

How much does a New York learner permit cost?

One fee covers the first permit and license, and it changes with your age when you apply and the county you live in. For a Class D or DJ applicant aged 16 to 16½, the DMV table shows $80.00, or $90.00 with the MCTD fee.

The MCTD fee applies in the five New York City boroughs and in Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester counties, at $1.00 for every 6 months the document is valid.

What do you need to bring to apply for a New York learner permit?

Bring the MV-44 application, proof of age, and proofs of name worth at least six points, with one of them signed. The DMV assigns each document a value, from 6 points for a New York photo license down to 1 point for items like a utility bill.

The permit comes out Standard, Enhanced or REAL ID depending on those proofs and the fee. A REAL ID cannot be issued online, by phone or by mail and needs two proofs of New York State residence.
