Delaware DMV permit practice test

As of October 26, 2026, the Delaware DMV knowledge exam asks applicants to identify highway signs by shape, color or symbol and to answer questions on Delaware rules of the road, motor vehicle laws and safety practices.

Delaware’s Graduated Driver License program takes applicants from 16 to just under 18 (or under 22 with an active IEP), who present a Delaware Driver Education Certificate.

The Delaware Driver Manual lists a $50 fee for an 8-year Class D license, and Delaware’s license fees include the learner’s permit issued before the license (per dmv.de.gov, checked on Oct 26, 2026).

Delaware permit test questions people ask

How old do you have to be to get a learner’s permit in Delaware?

Sixteen, through the Graduated Driver License program, which runs until 18 (or 22 for students with an active IEP). The teen first passes a certified Delaware driver education course and brings the blue and white Driver Education Certificate.

A sponsor, normally a parent or legal guardian, signs the application in front of a DMV employee and can withdraw that support until the teen turns 18. At 18 or older the program is optional: skip it and you take the eye, knowledge and road exams at the DMV.

What is on the Delaware knowledge test?

Two kinds of questions: naming highway signs from their shape, color or symbol alone, and answering rules-of-the-road questions drawn from the Delaware Driver Manual. The DMV does not publish a question count or passing score on the pages we read.

Vision is screened first. The minimum is 20/40 with or without glasses, and drivers between 20/40 and 20/50 may get daylight-only privileges.

What are the rules for a Delaware Level One Learner’s Permit?

Months one to six are fully supervised by a licensed driver who is 25 or older with five years on a Class D license, and the sponsor certifies 50 hours of practice, 10 at night. Months seven to twelve allow solo driving from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

For the whole year the car may carry the supervisor plus one other passenger, family excepted, and phones are banned even hands-free. After 12 full months the permit becomes a Class D license on its own; breaking the rules brings a two-month suspension the first time.
