West Virginia permit test questions people ask

How many questions are on the West Virginia permit test, and how many must be right?

At least 25 questions on traffic rules, signs and pavement markings from the Driver’s Licensing Handbook, and 19 of the 25 must be correct. The clock matters: whatever is still blank when time runs out is marked wrong.

You can start with the online written test, but its certificate is not permission to drive, so you still go to a DMV location. People who have trouble reading can ask for the audio version with headphones.

How old do you have to be for a West Virginia instruction permit?

Fifteen for the Level 1 GDL instruction permit, then 16 for the Level 2 intermediate license and 17 for Level 3. A parent, custodial parent or legal guardian signs for anyone under 18.

Adults who have never been licensed get a regular Class E instruction permit instead. It is valid for 180 days, and you need at least 30 days with it before the road skills test.

What are the Level 1 and Level 2 rules for West Virginia teen drivers?

On a Level 1 permit you drive from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. with a licensed driver 21 or older up front, carry no more than two non-family passengers besides that adult, and keep zero alcohol in your system. Two convictions revoke the permit for 90 days.

Level 2 requires age 16, six infraction-free months on Level 1 and 50 certified practice hours with 10 at night. Non-family passengers under 20 are not allowed for six months, then one is allowed; after 10 p.m. a supervising adult must ride along except for work, school, religious activities or emergencies.
