Montana permit test questions people ask

How old do you have to be for a Montana learner license?

Through traffic education, as young as 14½: Montana law lets the state issue a learner license to a teen who has finished or is taking an approved course, and the license is good for one year.

Teens under 16 who want to drive have to go through state-approved traffic education. Outside that route, the code does not license anyone under 15 except for hardship cases.

What is on the Montana knowledge test, and where do teens take it?

The state exam checks eyesight, the ability to read highway signs and knowledge of Montana traffic law, followed by a road or skills test. Students in school traffic education can take the learner license knowledge exam during the course itself.

What are Montana’s graduated licensing rules for drivers under 18?

A learner under 18 practices with a parent or guardian, or another licensed driver 18 or older they approve, and everyone in the car buckles up. After at least 6 months, a parent certifies 50 hours of driving, 10 at night, or 75 hours with 15 at night for an alternative course.

The first-year license keeps the teen off the road from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. with listed exceptions, allows only one non-family passenger under 18 for six months and three after that, and limits riders to the number of seatbelts.
