  2. Getting your permit

Question 2. You are 16 and hold an Oregon provisional instruction permit. Who may supervise your driving?

    Show answer

Answer: A. A licensed driver who is at least 21 and sits beside you

The permit is valid only with a licensed driver aged 21 or older in the seat next to you. For the practice to count toward your required hours, that driver must have held a license for at least 3 years.

  3. Speed and following distance

Question 3. An Oregon school speed sign is the "school hours" type, with no flashing light. When must you keep to 20 mph?

    Show answer

Answer: B. From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on days school is in session

A school hours sign applies between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on a school day. If you are not sure whether school is in session, the manual tells you to slow to 20 mph anyway.

  4. Speed and following distance

Question 4. No speed limit is posted on a street in an Oregon residential district. What is the legal limit?

    Show answer

    Answer: D. 25 mph

Oregon sets 25 mph by law in residential districts, public parks and on ocean shores open to vehicles, unless a different speed is posted. Business districts and school speed zones drop to 20 mph.

  5. Sharing the road

Question 5. You are on an Oregon road with two lanes in your direction and come up on a car stopped on the shoulder with its lights flashing. What should you do?

    Show answer

Answer: B. Change lanes so you are not next to it; you may also slow to at least 5 mph under the limit

The rule covers any motor vehicle stopped with flashing lights, not just police cars or tow trucks. Move out of the lane beside it, and you may also slow to at least 5 mph below the posted limit, giving it all the room you safely can.

  6. Sharing the road

Question 6. A school bus stops with red lights flashing across a road whose two directions are divided only by a painted median. What must you do in Oregon?

    Show answer

Answer: C. Stop, because a painted median does not make two separate roads

Only an unpaved median strip or a barrier turns a highway into two separate roads. With a painted median or a center turn lane, every lane of traffic must stop until the bus driver turns off the red lights.

  7. Railroad crossings

Question 7. A train has just passed and the crossing gate is starting to lift. When may you drive across?

    Show answer

Answer: A. Only once the gate is fully up and you are sure you can cross safely

Oregon makes it illegal to drive around or under a crossing gate while it is down or while it is being raised or lowered. After that, cross only when you are sure it is safe; on multiple tracks a second train may be coming.

  8. Parking

Question 8. What is the closest you may park to a fire hydrant in Oregon?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 10 feet

The Oregon Driver Manual bars stopping or parking within 10 feet of a fire hydrant. Crosswalks at intersections need 20 feet, and railroad or light rail crossings need 50 feet from the nearest rail.

  9. Alcohol and drugs

Question 9. A 19-year-old Oregon driver takes a breath test after one beer. What blood alcohol level means the driver fails?

    Show answer

Answer: D. Any amount at all

Oregon has a zero tolerance law for drivers under 21, so any blood alcohol concentration is a failed test. Drivers 21 and older fail at 0.08 percent or more.

  10. Getting your permit

Question 10. A 17-year-old with an Oregon provisional license wants to take a call through a hands-free headset while driving. Is that allowed?

    Show answer

Answer: C. No, drivers under 18 may not use a mobile device at all, hands-free included

Until 18, Oregon drivers may not use a cell phone or other mobile electronic device while driving, with or without a hands-free accessory. From 18 on, a phone may be used only through a hands-free accessory.
