  2. Getting your permit

Question 2. Who may sit in the front seat while you drive on a Kansas instruction permit?

    Show answer

Answer: B. Only the supervising licensed adult, who must be 21 or older with at least one year of driving experience

From Kansas Driving Handbook (Revised February 2022) · Section 1: The Driver’s License — Types of Driver’s Licenses and Driver’s Permits

  3. Speed and following distance

Question 3. No speed limit sign is posted on a Kansas county road outside town. What is the maximum speed?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 55 mph

K.S.A. 8-1558 sets 55 mph on county and township roads unless a sign says otherwise. Unposted state and federal highways allow 65 mph, and designated separated multilane highways 75 mph.

From Kansas Driving Handbook (Revised February 2022) · Section 2: State Laws and Rules of the Road — Speed Limits (K.S.A. 8-1558)

  4. Parking

Question 4. When you park along a curb in Kansas, how far from it may your car be?

    Show answer

Answer: B. No more than 12 inches

Kansas lists parking more than 12 inches from a curb among the places and positions where parking is not allowed, next to spots like a crosswalk at an intersection or a bridge.

From Kansas Driving Handbook (Revised February 2022) · Section 2: State Laws and Rules of the Road — Parking (K.S.A. 8-1571, 8-1572)

  5. Turns and lanes

Question 5. Kansas bans a U-turn anywhere other drivers cannot see your vehicle from at least how far away?

    Show answer

    Answer: D. 500 feet

Under K.S.A. 8-1546, skip the U-turn on a curve, near the top of a hill or anywhere you cannot be seen by other drivers for at least 500 feet. Local ordinances and signs may limit U-turns further.

  7. Alcohol and drugs

Question 7. At what blood alcohol concentration can a Kansas driver under 21 be arrested for alcohol impairment?

    Show answer

Answer: B. Move to a lane not next to it, or slow down and use due caution if you cannot change lanes

K.S.A. 8-1530 asks you to proceed with due caution and move into a lane that is not next to the stationary emergency vehicle. When a lane change is not possible, reduce your speed instead.

Kansas permit test questions people ask

How old do you have to be for a Kansas instruction permit?

Kansas issues a Class C instruction permit at 14. Teens who are 14 or 15 need a parent or guardian to approve, and a certificate from driver education can replace the written exam.

A restricted license can follow at 15, once the permit has been held for a full year and the teen has 25 supervised hours and approved driver education. Online driver education does not count in Kansas.

What rules apply to Kansas permit holders and teen drivers?

A permit holder drives only with a licensed adult 21 or older in the front seat and may not use a wireless device except to report a crime or call for emergency help.

At 16, a teen with less restricted privileges may drive anywhere from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. with at most one non-sibling passenger under 18. Before an unrestricted license, a parent signs off on 50 driving hours, 10 at night.
