Free Ohio practice test: 10 questions

OneTryPass wrote these questions from the Ohio Driver Manual (Digest of Motor Vehicle Laws). Pick an answer to see if you got it; each explanation names the part of the handbook it comes from.

  1. Getting your permit

Question 1. You are 15½ and just got your Ohio temporary instruction permit (TIPIC). Who may sit in the front passenger seat to supervise you?

    Show answer

Answer: B. A parent, guardian, custodian, licensed driving instructor, or an adult 21 or older acting in loco parentis

Until you turn 16, Ohio limits the front-seat supervisor to a parent, guardian, custodian, licensed driving instructor, or an adult 21 or older acting in loco parentis. At 16 and 17, any licensed driver 21 or older may supervise outside the midnight to 6 a.m. window.

  2. Getting your permit

Question 2. A 16-year-old Ohio permit holder wants to drive at 1 a.m. Who must be in the car?

    Show answer

Answer: C. A parent, guardian, or custodian who holds a valid driver license

From midnight to 6 a.m., an Ohio permit holder who is 16 or 17 must ride with a parent, guardian, or custodian who has a valid driver license. The rest of the day, any licensed driver 21 or older in the front passenger seat is enough.

  3. Alcohol and drugs

Question 3. What is the lowest blood alcohol concentration that makes it illegal for a 19-year-old to drive in Ohio?

    Show answer

    Answer: A. 0.02%

Ohio sets the limit at 0.02% for drivers under 21, 0.04% for commercial drivers, and 0.08% for everyone else. Operating a vehicle after underage alcohol consumption can cost a suspension of three months to two years.

  4. Parking

Question 4. How close to a fire hydrant may you stop, stand, or park in Ohio?

    Show answer

Answer: A. No closer than 10 feet

Ohio bans stopping, standing, or parking within 10 feet of a fire hydrant. The same rule keeps you at least 20 feet from an intersection or crosswalk and off sidewalks and driveways.

  5. Parking

Question 5. You parallel park on a two-way street in Ohio. What is the farthest your vehicle may be from the right curb?

    Show answer

    Answer: D. 12 inches

Ohio requires a parked vehicle to face the direction of traffic, parallel to and no more than 12 inches from the right curb. On a one-way street you may use either curb, still within 12 inches.

  6. Right of way

Question 6. A school bus stops with its red lights flashing on a two-lane road. How far from the bus must Ohio drivers coming from either direction stop?

    Show answer

Answer: B. At least 10 feet

On a road with fewer than four lanes, traffic from both directions stops at least 10 feet from the front or rear of the bus and waits until it moves or the driver waves traffic on. On roads with four or more lanes, only traffic heading the same way as the bus stops.

  7. Sharing the road

Question 7. A farm tractor ahead of you shows an orange and red triangle on the back. What does that emblem tell you?

    Show answer

Answer: C. The vehicle travels at less than 25 mph

In Ohio the slow-moving vehicle emblem means the vehicle goes less than 25 mph. You may cross a solid yellow line to pass it only if it moves at less than half the posted limit, you stay within the limit, and the oncoming lane has room.

  8. Speed and following distance

Question 8. The Ohio Driver Manual suggests a following distance of one vehicle length for every how many miles per hour?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 10 mph

Ohio recommends at least one vehicle length per 10 mph, or a four-second gap behind the vehicle ahead. Leave more room at night, in bad weather, on slippery roads, and behind trucks and buses.

Answer: D. Yes, headlights must be on whenever wipers are in use because of precipitation

    Show answer

    Answer: C. A 60-day license suspension and a $150 fine

Drivers under 18 may not use any electronic device while driving, even hands-free, except for navigation or emergency calls. A first violation brings a 60-day suspension and a $150 fine; a second brings one year and $300.

Ohio permit test questions people ask

How many questions are on the Ohio permit test, and what score passes?

Ohio gives 40 multiple-choice questions and asks for a 75% passage rate. The questions come from the Ohio Driver Manual, and the BMV points test takers to Sections 2 through 10.

You can test online through BMV Online Services, at a Driver Exam Station, or at select deputy registrar agencies. The test comes in ten languages, from Somali and Haitian Creole to American Sign Language.

How old do you have to be to get a temporary instruction permit in Ohio?

Fifteen years and six months is the earliest age for the vision screening and knowledge test. After passing both, you have 60 days to buy the Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC) at a deputy registrar; wait longer and both tests start over.

A parent or guardian co-signs for anyone under 18. Applicants under 21 also complete driver education: 24 hours of class or online instruction plus 8 hours behind the wheel with a licensed school.

What are the rules for an Ohio TIPIC and probationary license?

Who can supervise depends on your age. Under 16, the front-seat adult must be a parent, guardian, custodian, licensed driving instructor or an adult 21 or older acting in loco parentis. At 16 and 17, any licensed driver 21 or older works, except from midnight to 6 a.m., when it must be a licensed parent, guardian or custodian.

Permit holders carry the TIPIC, leave phones and other mobile devices alone, and everyone in the car buckles up. Teens keep the permit at least six months and log 50 practice hours, 10 of them after dark.

In the first 12 months of a probationary license, a driver under 18 stays off the road from midnight to 6 a.m., with exceptions for a parent or guardian, work, and school or religious events, and carries no more than one passenger outside the family unless a parent or guardian rides along.
