Ohio CDL questions people ask

How does the Ohio CDL skills test work?

You go through three timed segments in a fixed order: vehicle inspection (30 minutes at most), basic vehicle control (40 minutes at most) and the on-road drive. Failing one segment ends the test there.

Skills tests run at CDL testing sites listed in the Ohio Department of Public Safety directory. Several are run by outside organizations, such as Great Lakes Testing Services in Columbus and Cuyahoga Community College in Euclid, and sites like Hancock County’s in Findlay take appointments only.

Can a non-domiciled driver get an Ohio CDL right now?

Not according to the BMV notices posted in November 2025 and February 2026. Ohio stopped issuing non-domiciled CDLs in September 2025, and in November 2025 it said permits and tests for nonrenewable/nontransferable customers would stay paused with no restart date.

The February 2026 update told current non-domiciled holders to wait for a BMV letter and then re-verify legal presence in person; holders who miss the deadline in that letter are downgraded to a Class D license.

Ohio CDL FAQ

Do Ohio veterans with a disability pay CDL fees?

The BMV fee table marks the CDL temporary permit, CDL renewal and duplicate CDL as free for a 100% documented disabled veteran. The first commercial license is not marked that way, so its regular fee applies. Source: official page "Driver License / Identification Card Fees", checked on Oct 26, 2026.

How do I get my medical certificate to the Ohio BMV?

You self-certify your type of commercial driving on form BMV 2159, which can be sent by mail, by email to [email protected], at a deputy registrar or online. If you pick category 1, non-excepted interstate, your certified medical examiner must submit the certificate electronically. Source: official page "BMV 2159 (2/26) CDL Self-Certification Authorization", checked on Oct 26, 2026.

Is there a separate CDL practice test for Ohio?

No. Every state builds its CDL knowledge tests for each vehicle group and endorsement from the same FMCSA pre-approved pool of test questions (49 CFR 383.133). One OneTryPass CDL pack covers Ohio and every other state; what changes in Ohio is on this page: fees, where you test and the state manual. Source: official page "49 CFR 383.133, Test methods (eCFR)", checked on Oct 26, 2026.

Is OneTryPass affiliated with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles?

No. OneTryPass is an independent practice site. Ohio's CDL rules and manual are free on the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles website, linked on this page.
