New Jersey CDL permit test: fees, testing and the state manual

As of October 26, 2026, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission lists the commercial permit at $125, valid for 180 days, for applicants 18 or older who hold a basic New Jersey auto license.

New Jersey issues the CLP as a digital card in the CDL format; it is valid for 180 days and must be paired with a New Jersey driver’s license when operating a commercial motor vehicle.

The New Jersey MVC gives CDL knowledge tests by appointment at its Driver Testing Centers, among them Bakers Basin, Camden, Edison and Newark (per nj.gov, checked on Oct 26, 2026).

New Jersey CDL questions people ask

What are the New Jersey CDL fees?

The first payment is $125 for the examination test receipt, the same amount the MVC lists for the commercial permit, and it is not refunded. After the road test, the four-year CDL costs $42, with $2 more per endorsement.

A first CDL is prorated to end with your current basic license. Lost paperwork costs $3 for a duplicate test receipt and $11 for a duplicate CLP, and a test receipt older than 180 days must be renewed for another $125.

How many questions are on the New Jersey CDL knowledge test?

Fifty on the general test, with a separate test for each endorsement. Each needs 80 percent, and general knowledge has to be passed before any endorsement test.

The exams are multiple choice on a computer terminal, in English or Spanish, with HAZMAT in English only; there are no audio versions and no interpreters. A failure means a seven-day wait, and passing scores stay good for 360 days.

How does the New Jersey commercial learner permit work?

The CLP comes after you pass the knowledge tests, have the test receipt validated and file the CDL Holder Self-Certification form. It is a digital card, valid for 180 days, carried with your New Jersey driver’s license whenever you drive a CMV.

Practice alongside a CDL-licensed driver for 14 days before the road test unless the wait is waived. Moving violations, even in your own car, bring the same enhanced penalties a CDL holder would face.

What happens at the New Jersey CDL road test?

Book an appointment, bring the valid test receipt and CLP, and arrive in a CMV suited to the license or endorsement you want, with a licensed driver qualified to operate it. A safety specialist scores the pre-trip, basic skills and road skills.

Failing means at least two weeks before a retest, and several failures can lead the MVC to impose a six-month wait. If you passed the pre-trip portion, you may bank your skills scores for one CLP cycle of 180 days.

Who can apply for a commercial license in New Jersey?

You need a basic New Jersey Class D license, 20/40 vision in each eye, the ability to recognize red, green and amber, and U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residence. Applicants under 21 stay in intrastate commerce and cannot hold HAZMAT or passenger endorsements.

Non-domiciled permits and licenses are limited to H-2A, H-2B and E-2 holders with an unexpired foreign passport and Form I-94; asylees, refugees and DACA recipients are excluded, and work permits (EADs) are no longer accepted.

A signed CDL Holder Self-Certification form is mandatory, and drivers in non-excepted commerce, or with a passenger endorsement, need an electronic medical certificate on the FMCSA National Registry.
