How long is an Arizona commercial learner’s permit good for?

Twelve months from the issue date. During that time you may practice on public highways in a vehicle of the permit’s class while carrying the permit.

Who can apply for a commercial license in Arizona?

You can apply for the learner’s permit at 18. For the license itself, the statute requires that you have held a driver license for at least one year, issued by Arizona, another state or another country, plus proof that you meet the medical standards.

Commercial drivers who move their domicile to Arizona get 30 days to switch to an Arizona commercial license of the right class.

Who gives the CDL driving test in Arizona?

Besides ADOT, the director can authorize third-party providers to handle commercial license testing. Since July 2014, anyone giving the skills test under that program needs a separate examiner authorization.

Bring a vehicle that meets the minimum size for the class you want. The test includes showing that you know how to do a pretrip inspection.

Arizona CDL FAQ

Can military veterans skip the Arizona CDL driving test?

Possibly. Under A.R.S. 28-3229, ADOT may waive the driving test for active-duty service members and honorably separated veterans with a clean two-year record who drove a representative military vehicle. They still have to pass the knowledge tests. Source: official page "A.R.S. 28-3229", checked on Oct 26, 2026.

How often does an Arizona CDL have to be renewed?

Every eight years. ADOT may ask a renewal applicant for medical evidence and may give knowledge tests, road tests or both. Source: official page "A.R.S. 28-3223", checked on Oct 26, 2026.

Is there a separate CDL practice test for Arizona?

No. Every state builds its CDL knowledge tests for each vehicle group and endorsement from the same FMCSA pre-approved pool of test questions (49 CFR 383.133). One OneTryPass CDL pack covers Arizona and every other state; what changes in Arizona is on this page: fees, where you test and the state manual. Is OneTryPass affiliated with the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division (ADOT MVD)?

No. OneTryPass is an independent practice site. Arizona's CDL rules and manual are free on the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division (ADOT MVD) website, linked on this page.
