California CDL questions people ask

How much does a CDL cost in California?

An original Class A or B commercial license is $100 on the DMV fee table. Renewing it costs $59, and every commercial driving or skill retest adds $46.

The fee table has no separate line for the permit itself. You pay the nonrefundable application fee at the office when you apply for the CLP, and that payment covers the application for 12 months.

How long is a California commercial learner’s permit valid?

Up to 180 days from the day it is issued. One more 180-day period is possible, as long as the permit does not run past one year from the date you first applied.

Hold the permit for at least 14 days before booking the skills test. While practicing, keep your regular California license with you and ride with a California CDL holder licensed for that vehicle.

What is on the California CDL skills test?

Three segments: a vehicle inspection, basic control skills and a road test, taken in a vehicle of the class you want. Skills tests are given only by appointment, which you can request by phone at 1-800-777-0133.

A failed segment postpones the remaining ones. You get three tries in total, and the DMV charges a retest fee when you retake the skills test; the fee table lists $46 for a commercial driving or skill retest.

Who can get a CDL in California right now?

You first need a standard California noncommercial Class C license (a temporary or interim one is accepted). At 18 you may drive commercially inside California; interstate work and hazardous loads start at 21.

Non-domiciled commercial permits and licenses for people with limited legal presence are on hold, including renewals and pending applications.

California CDL FAQ

Can my employer give me the CDL road test in California?

Yes, if the company is approved for the DMV’s Employer Testing Program. Its certified examiners test on DMV-approved routes and sign a Certificate of Driving Skill (DL 170 ETP). The DMV also picks some of those drivers at random for a DMV-administered driving test. Source: official page "Employer Testing Program", checked on Oct 26, 2026.

Is there a Spanish version of the California commercial driver handbook?

Yes. The Driver’s Handbooks page carries the handbook in English and Spanish, plus a supplement for each. The January 2023 supplement adds Sections 11M and 12M for the modernized vehicle inspection and basic control tests. Source: official pages "Driver's Handbooks - Driving Test Resources" and "Commercial Driver's License Handbook, Supplement for Modernized Version (DL 650 X, January 2023), PDF", checked on Oct 26, 2026.

Can I bring an interpreter to the California CDL skills test?

No. The handbook says every skills test is conducted in English and an interpreter is not allowed, even though the knowledge tests come in several languages. Source: official page "California Commercial Driver Handbook (DL 650, REV. 12/2019), PDF", checked on Oct 26, 2026.

Is there a separate CDL practice test for California?

No. Every state builds its CDL knowledge tests for each vehicle group and endorsement from the same FMCSA pre-approved pool of test questions (49 CFR 383.133). One OneTryPass CDL pack covers California and every other state; what changes in California is on this page: fees, where you test and the state manual. Source: official page "49 CFR 383.133, Test methods (eCFR)", checked on Oct 26, 2026.

Is OneTryPass affiliated with the California Department of Motor Vehicles?

No. OneTryPass is an independent practice site. California's CDL rules and manual are free on the California Department of Motor Vehicles website, linked on this page.
