Citizenship practice test FAQ

Is the real citizenship civics test multiple choice?

No. The 2025 USCIS civics test is oral: an officer asks up to 20 of the 128 official questions, and the applicant needs 12 correct answers to pass. The officer asks out loud and you answer out loud, so this practice test works the same way: say your answer, then check it against the USCIS list. Source: official page "2025 Civics Test", checked on Oct 25, 2026.

Does the officer always ask all 20 questions?

No. The USCIS officer stops the 2025 civics test as soon as the applicant reaches 12 correct answers or 9 incorrect ones, and 9 incorrect answers mean a fail. Source: official page "2025 Civics Test", checked on Oct 25, 2026.

What is the 65/20 version of the practice test?

An applicant tested under the 65/20 rule is asked 10 of the 20 asterisked questions, needs 6 correct answers to pass and may take the civics test in the language of their choice. Switch to "65/20 test" above to practice only the questions marked with an asterisk. Source: official page "128 Civics Questions and Answers (2025 version), Form M-1778", checked on Oct 25, 2026.

Are these the real questions on the citizenship test?

Yes. Every question here comes from the USCIS list of 128 questions for the 2025 civics test, Form M-1778, with the answers USCIS lists. The officer picks which ones to ask, so no one can tell you in advance which 20 you will get.

Where this information comes from
